What has Interpersonal Communication Skill /
Networking got to do with your
dream career... Everything.

You need people for modeling your own
success strategy;

You need people as mentors to help you
move forward in your dream career;

You need people for references to get
that incredible job;

You need people to propel you forward
towards that most wanted promotion on the career rung;

You need people's testimonials about
your work or services you offer;

You need people to help you spread the
word about your dream career or business;

You need people as customers or
clients...
So whether you are in a job or launching your own business
empire... You need people. You need interpersonal Communication skills for
networking to forward your career goals or even for building your business
organization. You need to build relationships.
Hence you need to have at least basic to
high networking skills depending on where you stand on the career ladder.
Now even before you think about using networking skills to forward your
career interests, you need to have some basic interpersonal communication skills...

The ability to make small talk
successfully... can you strike up a conversation with people standing in
line at Starbucks? Can you talk to people on the elevator? Can you make
small talk with total strangers? [Yes, I know of people who have drummed
up business clients worth thousands of dollars at their very first
conversation in a Starbucks line up!].

The ability to be able to initiate
conversations and keep them alive with total strangers... you should not
be freezing up every time you see a stranger.

You need strong listening skills... For
conversation is a two way street, and the best communicators are usually
those who have good listening skills... Listen to people patiently to find
out what there needs really are, and how you can be useful to them.
Remember, people usually love talking about themselves... so they need
listening ears more than anything else.

Finally, you should have the ability to
cultivate the relationship further... simply meeting and talking to people
once or even exchanging business cards is not enough... For them to even
remember you and come in useful when needed, you should have open lines of
communication with them. Drop an occasional email; make an occasional
phone call; remember to send those christmas cards; if needed you could
even graduate into having lunch or tea.

Always remember that networking is a two way
street... if you expect people to come in useful to you , you should be
ready to do the same when needed.
How To Network?
From a broader perspective, you have a
networking opportunity in every line up, every mall, every elevator, every
crowd or even at the park... the simplest way is to get involved in
various professional institutions of interest to you, participate actively
in seminars, symposiums, trade shows... get involved anywhere you expect a
crowd of like minded people. Put in energy... the more active you are, the
more people will notice you, want to get acquainted with you and even
remember you later on.
