Your First Customer/Client?
Launching Your Dream Career? Here is a very
important concept for you to remember:
You are in business for yourself.
If it is a job, you are selling your services to your employer, and you
have only one client; While in a business you may have several clients.
So whether you are doing a job search, or
searching for your first client, the concept is the same: You are
proactively selling yourself.

As a first step make sure your cover letter,
resume or sales letter is polished to sheer perfection.

Research prospective employers or clients
who could possibly use your services, shortlist all those companies,
employers or people you want to send your sales letter to

Send out individual customized letters to
each one of them. Here, I am placing emphasis on 'customized', just
sending generic resumes or flyers will not work as well as
customization... People feel obligated to reply to letters that are
personally addressed to them and show a knowledge of there business or
interests, while flyers or generic letters are usually relegated to
the recycle bin.

If your 'sales letter' is well written and
you have sent it out to say a hundred clients or more, you should be able
to get back at least a few replies or hot leads... people who are
interested in talking to you... you are now ready to proceed further...
Talk to them, set up interviews, persuade them. Close the sale.
Of course, also use other methods such as
networking or 'word of mouth', advertising your business or services...
spread the word as much as you can. Keep searching until you get your
first client. Then proceed to give them the best service possible.
Remember to get feed back from your first client and use it as a
testimonial if possible... you have now got a track record, and convincing
the next client will be much easier.
