  •  Your past track record... have you finished any other jobs successfully. Where is your client list?

  • Testimonials from past clients. or What others say about you.

  • Your credibility and expertise. Do you come across as an expert in your field. Can you be trusted to complete the work expected of you... do you have any credentials that prove that you will do the job.

  • What can you do for the clients business, can you make their business more profitable, can you bring in more customers to them, can you provide some essential much needed service to them?

If you are applying for a regular run of the mill over the counter  employment:

Employers consider...

  • You should not be more qualified than the hiring manager or your own manager... else you will be rejected right away for very obvious reasons.

  • You should be  docile... easily controllable or manageable... Simply be able to follow instructions and do what your manager expects you to do... ie. Do not show independence or an ability to work without supervision or your manager may feel that his/her authority is being threatened. Be able to follow authority.

  • You should know your work well, and be able to do what is expected of you.

  •  Do not show creativity beyond the position you are applying for. Even if you do show some originality in your work... this will most likely be claimed by your manager and presented as their own unique idea to the shakers and movers in the industry.

  • Be a hard worker. Be able to do all the grinding work that is expected in the position.

  • Be available to work whenever you are needed.... all unholy hours... weekends, evenings, holidays...

  • Be able to get along with your manager easily.

  • Be able to do anything your manager requires of you... even if it falls outside your normal line of work.

For More sophisticated positions or for slightly more enlightened employers...

  • You should be able to work with minimum supervision but within the company framework.

  • You are allowed a little bit of independence, originality as long as this brings in money, saves money by reducing costs or reduces time for your employer.

  •  Again if you hit mother-lode with your ideas.... you will be rewarded with promotions, though your success will immediately be claimed by the company as sole property. Yes, you lose all rights or patents to your idea or achievement. In fact your prospective employer is assessing your credentials closely to see how the company can use these to move forward.

  • You are allowed some career development perks as long as these are beneficial to the company you are working for.

  • You need to be a good persuasive communicator, with good negotiation skills and problem solving skills... these are needed not only to do your job well, but also to manipulate your way along the corporate ladder.

  • You have to have some political maneuvering skills to be able to survive in that environment successfully.

So be sure to prepare your resume or cover letter or sales letter that conforms to the above guidelines to increase your chances of being hired for that much coveted position.
